The Last Time I Saw Richard

The last time I saw Richard

he was buttoning his fly

stowing rod and reel in boat's hold

after fishing illegal waters

he ignored no trespassing signs,

oil on the cormorant's wing,

the acrid odor of burnt gun powder,

the bobbing of a tiny shoe

he had fished there many times

with nets full to breaking

so the voice on the bullhorn

did not deter him

when asked why he fished

ignoring drumbeat and bugle call

he said with mopish grin,

I saw my reflection

in clear, blue water
